A former employee of a US lender will spend more than two years behind bars for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from people’s accounts.
The Western District of Washington District Attorney’s Office says Tacoma resident Aneicia Ford worked with accomplices to steal $345,014 from accounts at a credit union.
According to court documents, Ford worked at the credit union between May and August 2022, where she worked as a call center employee to assist customers with concerns about their accounts.
Prosecutors say that within days of his employment, Ford analyzed customer accounts and zeroed in on certain viable profiles for the scheme.
He also collected sensitive financial information from clients’ accounts, such as available funds, the victim’s age or profession, which he handed over to Dangelo Roberts, 23, and his group.
The team then used the stolen information to forge false IDs and obtain debit cards in the victims’ names before making withdrawals of up to $25,000.
In other cases, the group withdrew money from victims’ accounts by ordering cashier’s checks and purchasing money orders payable to crew members or associates. They also exploited their unauthorized access to move money between accounts and check balances.
The credit union had to absorb the losses to compensate affected customers.
prosecutors say,
“Ford knowingly joined the conspiracy shortly after starting a new job, after receiving training that told her not to do precisely what she did, and contributed to the conspiracy for months. The credit union’s electronic records show that Ford accessed the victims’ accounts on multiple occasions throughout her employment (and not, for example, all 23 accounts at once). The account takeovers in this case could not have occurred without the personally identifiable information she stole.”
U.S. District Judge Jamal N. Whitehead sentenced Ford to 30 months in prison, saying his actions had a negative impact on the lives of real people.
“What you did was serious… Your employer entrusted you with access to more personal customer information… Real people suffered real harm from the actions you took.”
