An Indian court has sentenced a former member of the Legislative Assembly of the Bharatiya Janata (BJP) party to life imprisonment for his participation in a high -profile bitcoin extortion plot.

Nalin Kotadiya and other thirteen individuals were convicted of the kidnapping of a Surrat businessman and extorting 200 bitcoins of him.

Perpetual chain in the 2018 extortion case

A local court in Ahmedabad issued today’s verdict, concluding the high profile case that dates back to 2018.

Fourteen people, including the former member of the Legislative Assembly of BJP, Nalin Kotadiya, and the former officer of the Indian Police Service, Jagdish Patel, were declared guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment in prison. An individual was acquitted.

An unbelievable crime

The case began with the kidnapping of Shailesh Bhatt, a Surrat cryptocurrency businessman and merchant.

According to the reports, the people who intend to be from the Central Research Office of India (CBI) attracted him to a meeting in Gandhinagar.

Instead, he was kidnapped from a service station. A team of police who use official government vehicles led Bhatt to a farm.

The defendant confiscated 200 bitcoins, valued at approximately ₹ 12 million rupees at that time, and demanded a rescue of ₹ 32 million rupees.

The investigation also revealed that Bhatt had previously stolen Bitcoins worth ₹ 150 million rupees of another Surat resident called Dhawal Mawani. Upon learning of this, the defendant, including Nalin Kotadiya, conspired Rob Bhatt.

Unmasking conspirators

Bhatt established the investigation when he filed a formal complaint to the Criminal Investigation Department of India (CID).

As the investigation deepened, the CID arrested ten police officers, including Anant Patel and the lawyer with Surat headquarters, Ketan Patel.

His interrogations soon revealed the names of Jagdish Patel and Kotadiya. Kotadiya hid, and an unpaid order was issued before his eventual arrest.

The scope of the conspiracy was extended even more with the participation of a true Inspector of CBI, Sunil Nair. According to the reports, Nair demanded a Bhatt bribery and threatened to initiate an investigation against him.

The Court’s decision finally marked an important step against corruption and criminal activity that involves police, politicians and cryptocurrencies.
